Granite, Worktop Material of Choice
There are many alternatives to countertops today, with newer materials coming out at a near daily frequency. Acrylic tops such as Corian and their like counterparts used to be a very cost effective solution, now their prices have skyrocketed. Only certain blah colours are still priced within reason. The biggest downfall to this material is that you are paying top dollar for a material than scratch and etch. Quartz based countertops provide a durable surface. Manufacturers such as Silestone, Caeserstone, and Zodiaq all compete for their share of the counter dollar. The good is, that it is nonporous and no maintenance. The bad is, that it is very expensive, only a handful of colours are in the first price group, everything else is around $65/sf and up. The ugly is, no matter how hard they try to make it look like stone, it still looks man made and fake. A top will never look natural without any movement or character. There are also many other products used, such as, permacrete, stained concrete, cultured marble, and more. Some of these products can be attractive but just like the others mentioned earlier, most if not all do not give the consumer “the bang for the buck”. Granite worktops have continued to grow in popularity since its introduction and in recent years have actually declined in price. Many competing quarries have opened up all over the world, most notably Brazil and China. Each mine is competing for the same dollar, and in this economy those dollars are hard fought. Beautiful 3cm material can be had now for less than $40/sf. New quarries are shipping unique looking slabs with sweeping movements, vibrant colors and handsome lines. Old standbys such as Santa Cecilia, Giallo Ornamental, and New Venetian Gold are coming in with a wide range of shades and colourings. That is one of the many beautiful things about granite, every slab is different, every piece has its own life, and every person has their own perception of it. Honestly, price varies considerably by location, so shop around carefully. Some fabricators stock their own materials, or some send you directly to the distributors. Which ever the case is, find the material that you like and don’t be afraid to price compare. Companies are very willing to negotiate, more than ever. Granite is a beautiful, natural, surface that can be neutral or striking, whatever look your going for. It’s value is unmatched in the countertop world and it adds value to your domicile and is a great selling point. Therefore, don’t be intimidated, times have changed. Makers of other materials will try and discourage you and tell you stories about maintenance and other issues, just tell them that you have made up your mind and that you are, “Rock Steady”.
